Artist Statement

Marieke Peeters creates immersive installations, sculptures and films that combine
intensive material research with performance. In her tactile and sensorial
installations sculptures become performers and performers become sculptures.
Using overwhelming amounts of dark materiality she invites other ways of relating
to intimate places and objects. Through the lens of the horror genre she wonders
how to be at home in an unlivable social reality. Within the framework of horror
- body horror, gothic and kaiki cinema - she borrows methods and imagery from
this cinematic genre to probe at times uncomfortable experiences of immersion
and alienation.
